Don’t Cheat Your Backswing

Don’t Cheat Your Backswing

If you want more distance and consistency, don’t cheat your backswing.

Most people let their lead arm get pinned against their chest in their backswing.

You see pictures of Tour Players in this position, so it must be good… right?

What you see in a picture is an example of a dynamic position.

When you purposefully pin your arm against your chest, you lose width and extension in your backswing… this limits your turn… and you lose power.

The goal in a backswing is to turn your body with your hands in front of your chest, keeping as much width as possible.

This width does 2 things…

  1. It creates a longer lever for you to apply more force on a golf ball.
  2. It forces you to turn more to achieve a full backswing, engaging your most powerful muscles, your core.

The Full Body Swing shows you use your body AND your arms efficiently. It starts by learning how to use your body… THEN add the arms.

Hack for Straighter Drives

Simple Hack for Straighter Drives

This simple hack will help you hit straighter drives on your very next swing.

WARNING: This hack only works for a short period of time…

If you Slice the Ball – Raise your tee.

If you Hook the Ball – Lower your tee.

This hack works because it changes the direction of your clubface, the same way hitting on the side of a hill does.

When the ball is above your feet (higher than normal), the club is heel down, toe up… so the loft on the club is actually pointing to the left. This is why it’s hard to hit the ball right when you’re on a hill.

When the ball is below your feet (lower than normal), the club is toe down… so the loft on the club is actually pointing to the right.

However, once you become accustomed to the new height for your tee (lower or higher), you’ll start returning to your old patterns and go back to leaving the clubface open or shut at impact.

To permanently fix your slice / hook, you have to change the pattern of your swing that is causing you to leave the clubface open / shut at impact.

The Full Body Swing shows you how to pattern your swing for consistency, using your body AND your arms efficiently. It starts by learning how to use your body… THEN add the arms.

Pallof Press for Stability

Pallof Press for Core Stability

Improve stability by resisting the rotation…

The Pallof Press is one of the best exercises to build strength and stability in your core, especially for golf.

The Pallof Press builds the muscles responsible for rotation in your core without unnecessary pressure and force on your body or joints.

This exercise is deceptively difficult.

It doesn’t look like you’re doing much on the surface… but inside, you’ll feel nearly every muscle responsible for rotation and stabilization firing.

You should find the tension that allows you to do 10 – 20 Pallof Presses max.

For an additional challenge, try an isometric hold with your arms extended. The right tension means you can hold it for at least 30 seconds but not more than 60 seconds.

Fix Your Tempo & Timing

Fix Your Tempo & Timing

A lot of amateurs struggle with consistency…

Especially when it’s less than a full swing – pitching or chipping around the green…

Or more than a full swing – pushing your driver or an iron a few extra yards for a tweener distance.

If your swing is giving you trouble… your body and arms are out of sync.

This causes all sorts of problems…

  • Too Short…
  • Too Long…
  • Too Far Left…
  • Too Far Right…
  • Chunking…
  • Blading….
  • Zero Confidence… and NO Feel.

Luckily, the fix is simple. TEMPO.

When you have a consistent Tempo, you will develop feel for the distance almost instantly.

The swing is a simple 4 count.

  1. At Address – Resting and Ready
  2. Begin your Backswing
  3. Transition to a Swing and Follow Through
  4. Hold Your Finish

I like to use Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone” to ensure I have a consistent tempo every time.

Use this trick anytime you have less than a full swing, including when you putt.

And when you need more distance…

Move Fast to Swing Fast

Move Fast to Swing Fast

Use this drill to practice swinging fast…

If you want to swing fast, you have to practice swinging fast.

The easiest way to swing fast is to swing light.

Swinging light primes the body to move faster.

The Whoosh Drill is the best way to practice swinging fast.

Use an alignment stick or club shaft without a clubhead if you have one. Practice swinging, working to increase the “whoosh” sound out in front of the ball. The auditory feedback helps you find your body’s natural sequence to maximize your whoosh. When you can consistently achieve your max whoosh, switch to your driver.

The Whoosh Drill is a great warmup before hitting driver. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can gain a few extra MPH.

Rotate Around Your Spine

Rotate Around Your Spine

When you address the ball, you aren’t sitting or squatting…

Use your hip hinge to address the ball and maintain your posture.

Then, rotate around your spine.

This means your forward bend turns into dynamic side bend as your hips and shoulders rotate around your spine.

Lifting instead of rotating is where the classic “Keep Your Head Down” advice comes from.

When you rotate around your spine, your weight stays centered, your radius stays consistent, you make solid contact.

Rotate for More Power

Increasing your rotation is as easy as dancing.

Narrow Stance for More Accuracy

Narrow Stance for More Accuracy

Try this drill if you struggle with pure contact…

Most people sway when they swing a golf club.

Swaying usually results in poor contact, thinned and fat shots, because your swing orbits around your center of mass.

When you sway, the low point of your swing moves too.

This is a common problem if your stance is too wide.

Start with a narrow stance, if your contact is instantly better, this drill is for you.

Practice by rotating all the way through your shots with a narrow stance… then slowly widen your stance being mindful not to let your body start to sway in your swing.

Sweep The Ground

Sweep The Ground

You don’t need to help the ball…

A lot of people try to hit “down” on the ball… Others try to help the ball up into the air.

In truth, you want to sweep through the ball.

Your swing doesn’t change between shorter clubs and longer clubs… where you make contact with the ball in your swing changes slightly, but how you swing does not change.

You don’t need to help the ball… either by hammering the ball down or trying to lifting the ball into the air. The face of the club is designed to do all the work for you based on your distance and desired ball flight. (That’s why you get 14 clubs.)

Like a broom, if you hammer down or sweep up, you won’t get much done.

A smooth swing that fits the leading edge of the club between the ball and the earth will always deliver the best result.
