Fix Your Tempo & Timing

Fix Your Tempo & Timing

A lot of amateurs struggle with consistency…

Especially when it’s less than a full swing – pitching or chipping around the green…

Or more than a full swing – pushing your driver or an iron a few extra yards for a tweener distance.

If your swing is giving you trouble… your body and arms are out of sync.

This causes all sorts of problems…

  • Too Short…
  • Too Long…
  • Too Far Left…
  • Too Far Right…
  • Chunking…
  • Blading….
  • Zero Confidence… and NO Feel.

Luckily, the fix is simple. TEMPO.

When you have a consistent Tempo, you will develop feel for the distance almost instantly.

The swing is a simple 4 count.

  1. At Address – Resting and Ready
  2. Begin your Backswing
  3. Transition to a Swing and Follow Through
  4. Hold Your Finish

I like to use Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone” to ensure I have a consistent tempo every time.

Use this trick anytime you have less than a full swing, including when you putt.

And when you need more distance…

Move Fast to Swing Fast

Move Fast to Swing Fast

Use this drill to practice swinging fast…

If you want to swing fast, you have to practice swinging fast.

The easiest way to swing fast is to swing light.

Swinging light primes the body to move faster.

The Whoosh Drill is the best way to practice swinging fast.

Use an alignment stick or club shaft without a clubhead if you have one. Practice swinging, working to increase the “whoosh” sound out in front of the ball. The auditory feedback helps you find your body’s natural sequence to maximize your whoosh. When you can consistently achieve your max whoosh, switch to your driver.

The Whoosh Drill is a great warmup before hitting driver. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can gain a few extra MPH.

Rotate Around Your Spine

Rotate Around Your Spine

When you address the ball, you aren’t sitting or squatting…

Use your hip hinge to address the ball and maintain your posture.

Then, rotate around your spine.

This means your forward bend turns into dynamic side bend as your hips and shoulders rotate around your spine.

Lifting instead of rotating is where the classic “Keep Your Head Down” advice comes from.

When you rotate around your spine, your weight stays centered, your radius stays consistent, you make solid contact.

Rotate for More Power

Rotate for More Power

Increasing your rotation is as easy as dancing.

Sam Snead, regarded as having a perfect swing, known as “Slammin’ Sammy” for effortlessly hitting the long ball, and one of the all time greats, knew you had to let your body rotate, both in the backswing and the follow through.

If you want power, distance, and consistency, you need to learn how to rotate and swing the club with your body.

One of the reasons you lose distance as you get older is that you stop rotating.

When you rotate with your body, speed and power feels easy.

Narrow Stance for More Accuracy

Narrow Stance for More Accuracy

Try this drill if you struggle with pure contact…

Most people sway when they swing a golf club.

Swaying usually results in poor contact, thinned and fat shots, because your swing orbits around your center of mass.

When you sway, the low point of your swing moves too.

This is a common problem if your stance is too wide.

Start with a narrow stance, if your contact is instantly better, this drill is for you.

Practice by rotating all the way through your shots with a narrow stance… then slowly widen your stance being mindful not to let your body start to sway in your swing.
